Description

Stromatopelma calceatum , commonly known as the Feather Leg Baboon, is a highly sought-after Old World arboreal tarantula, recognised for its slender build, muted bronze-grey colouration, and distinctive “feathered” leg appearance caused by fine hairing.

This species is an obligate arboreal, constructing extensive webbing high within cork bark tubes, branches, or vertical hides. Given the opportunity, it will create dense, layered web structures and remain concealed within them, often only emerging at night or when feeding.

Exceptionally fast and unpredictable, S. calceatum is known for its defensive nature and potent venom. It is not a species for handling and requires confident, experienced keepers who are comfortable working with high-speed, reactive tarantulas. Enclosures must be secure, with careful attention paid during maintenance to prevent escape.

Despite its temperament, this species is a prolific feeder and grows steadily in well-maintained conditions. It thrives in warm, moderately humid environments with good ventilation and vertical space.
