Description

Psalmopoeus cambridgei , commonly known as the Trinidad Chevron Tarantula, is a striking arboreal species admired for its attractive chevron markings on the abdomen, long legs and impressive speed. Native to Trinidad, this species is a popular choice among experienced keepers looking for an active tarantula with fascinating natural behaviours.

An obligate arboreal species, P. cambridgei thrives in a tall enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing space, cork bark and secure anchor points for webbing. It readily constructs silken retreats around its chosen hiding places, often creating a network of tunnels and webbing within the enclosure. Providing suitable cover and vertical surfaces will encourage natural behaviour and give the spider a secure place to retreat.

Although this species is often admired for its appearance and active nature, it is exceptionally quick and can be defensive when disturbed. As a New World tarantula, it does not possess the same type of urticating hairs commonly associated with many terrestrial New World species. It may instead rely on speed and defensive behaviour when threatened. Handling is strongly discouraged, and enclosure maintenance should be carried out carefully to minimise stress and the risk of escape.

Care should focus on maintaining stable temperatures, good ventilation and appropriate humidity. The enclosure should be kept suitably ventilated, with access to fresh water and moisture levels adjusted to avoid persistently wet or stagnant conditions. A secure retreat is essential, allowing the spider to hide and feel comfortable.

Feeding response is generally strong, with appropriately sized live invertebrate prey offered according to the spider's size and condition. Juveniles can grow relatively quickly under suitable conditions, so monitoring growth, feeding response and enclosure size is recommended. Uneaten prey should be removed, particularly when the tarantula is approaching a moult.

With its attractive markings, impressive webbing and energetic behaviour, Psalmopoeus cambridgei is a rewarding species for keepers interested in arboreal tarantulas. Its speed and defensive potential make secure housing and confident, careful husbandry essential.
