Description

The Porcellio magnificus is one of the true giants of the isopod world, rivalling P. expansus and P. hoffmanseggi in size. Reaching up to 3 cm, this species lives up to its name — “magnificus” — with its large, broad body and striking reddish-brown colouration. Highly sought after, it is a must-have for any serious isopod collector.

They thrive in enclosures with excellent airflow, a clear moisture gradient (humid retreats paired with drier areas), and a deep, nutrient-rich substrate. A constant supply of leaf litter, decaying wood, and calcium supplements is essential to maintain healthy, long-lived colonies. Colonies reproduce steadily, though at a slower rate than smaller Porcellio , rewarding patient keepers with impressive, display-worthy groups.

With their sheer size, bold colouring, and Iberian origins, the Porcellio magnificus is best suited for intermediate to advanced keepers who want to add one of the most impressive isopods in the hobby to their collection.
