Description

Phormingochilus sp. ‘Akaya’ is a highly sought-after Old World arboreal tarantula, admired for its deep earthy tones, subtle patterning, and the elegant, elongated form typical of the genus. As it matures, this species develops a rich blend of browns and greys, often with understated contrast that gives it a refined, naturalistic appearance.

An obligate arboreal, ‘Akaya’ will readily construct extensive webbing within vertical cork bark, hollows, and elevated structures. It prefers height and security, often creating thick silk retreats where it will remain concealed for much of the time, emerging primarily to feed.

This species is extremely fast and highly reactive, with a strong defensive disposition. Like other members of the genus, it possesses medically significant venom and should never be handled. Calm, deliberate movements and well-planned enclosure maintenance are essential when working with this species.

Feeding response is typically strong, and growth can be relatively quick under stable conditions. It thrives in warm, humid enclosures with good airflow, replicating the tropical forest environment it originates from.
