Description

Grammostola rosea 'Red Colour Form', commonly known as the Chilean Rose Tarantula, is a popular terrestrial species admired for its attractive reddish tones, which can range from subtle coppery highlights to more pronounced red and pink hues across the body and legs. This colour form is particularly appealing to keepers looking for a classic tarantula with a little extra colour.

As a terrestrial species, G. rosea benefits from a ground-based enclosure with a suitable depth of substrate for burrowing, a secure hide and a shallow water dish. Spiderlings measuring 1–2cm or more should be housed in appropriately sized, escape-proof enclosures that allow easy access to prey while providing enough substrate for natural behaviours.

This species is generally considered hardy and relatively easy to maintain. However, individuals can be slow-growing and may go through extended periods without feeding, particularly before moulting. These fasting periods are not necessarily a cause for concern when the spider otherwise appears healthy and has a suitably rounded abdomen.

Care should focus on providing a dry-to-moderately dry substrate, good ventilation and constant access to fresh water. Excessive moisture should be avoided, and the enclosure should not be kept persistently wet. A stable temperature and a suitable retreat will help support healthy development.

Feeding should consist of appropriately sized live invertebrate prey, such as small crickets or roach nymphs. Offer prey according to the spiderling's size and condition, removing uneaten food and avoiding leaving live prey with a spider that is preparing to moult.

With its attractive red colouration, robust nature and relatively straightforward husbandry, Grammostola rosea 'Red Colour Form' is an excellent choice for both newer keepers and experienced enthusiasts looking to raise a classic tarantula from a small spiderling.
