Description

Ephebopus murinus , commonly known as the Skeleton Tarantula, is a distinctive New World species recognised for its intricate “skeleton-like” patterning across the legs, contrasting against a warm brown to bronze base colour.

Unlike most tarantulas, Ephebopus species possess urticating hairs on their pedipalps rather than the abdomen, which they can actively press into a perceived threat. Combined with their speed and defensive nature, this makes them a species best observed rather than handled.

Primarily fossorial, E. murinus will create deep burrows and extensive webbing within the substrate, often remaining hidden for long periods. A deep, slightly moist substrate is essential, along with a starter burrow or cork bark hide to help it establish quickly.

Feeding response is typically strong, and this species grows at a moderate pace under stable, warm, and humid conditions with good ventilation.

Best suited to intermediate keepers, Ephebopus murinus offers fascinating behaviour and unique defensive adaptations, making it a rewarding addition for those looking to expand beyond more typical New World species.
