Description

Dolichothele mineirum is an interesting Brazilian tarantula valued by enthusiasts for its distinctive appearance, active behaviour and fascinating burrowing habits. A less commonly encountered species in the hobby, it offers something different for keepers looking to expand their collection beyond the more familiar tarantulas.

Depending on the individual and its stage of development, this species may spend considerable time close to the substrate, making use of available cover and constructing retreats. A suitable enclosure should provide a secure hide, good ventilation and enough substrate to allow natural burrowing behaviour. Spiderlings should be housed in appropriately sized, escape-proof enclosures to make feeding and monitoring straightforward.

Although tarantulas in this group can be interesting to observe, individuals may be quick-moving and defensive when disturbed. Unnecessary handling should be avoided, and care should be taken when opening the enclosure or carrying out maintenance.

Care should focus on maintaining a stable temperature, providing good ventilation and ensuring that the substrate is appropriate for the spider's behaviour. A shallow water dish or suitable access to water should be provided, with moisture levels adjusted carefully to avoid persistently wet or waterlogged conditions.

Feeding should consist of appropriately sized live invertebrate prey, such as small crickets or roach nymphs for younger specimens. Offer prey according to the spider's size and condition, and remove uneaten food, particularly when the tarantula is approaching a moult.

An intriguing option for enthusiasts interested in less commonly available South American tarantulas, Dolichothele mineirum can be a rewarding species to raise when provided with suitable housing and consistent care.
