Description

Citharacanthus cyaneus is an attractive Cuban tarantula admired for its dark colouration and subtle blue to violet tones, which can become more noticeable under certain lighting conditions. Its distinctive appearance and interesting natural behaviours make it an appealing species for enthusiasts looking to expand their collection with a Caribbean tarantula.

A terrestrial species, C. cyaneus benefits from a ground-based enclosure with a suitable depth of substrate, a secure hide and enough space to move around comfortably. It may make use of existing retreats or excavate around its hiding place, so providing suitable substrate and cover helps encourage natural behaviour. Spiderlings should be housed in appropriately sized, escape-proof enclosures.

Although this species can be rewarding to observe, individual temperaments vary. Tarantulas may move quickly or become defensive when disturbed, so unnecessary handling should be avoided. Care should be taken during feeding and enclosure maintenance.

Husbandry should focus on maintaining a stable temperature, good ventilation and appropriate substrate moisture. The enclosure should not be allowed to become waterlogged, and fresh water should always be available in a suitable dish. A secure retreat will provide the spider with a place to hide and feel comfortable.

Feeding should consist of appropriately sized live invertebrate prey, such as crickets or roach nymphs for younger specimens. Feeding frequency should be adjusted to the spider's size, condition and response, with uneaten prey removed, particularly when the tarantula is approaching a moult.

With its attractive colouration and interesting behaviour, Citharacanthus cyaneus is an appealing addition for keepers interested in less commonly encountered Caribbean tarantulas. Providing secure housing and consistent husbandry will help support healthy growth and development.
