Description

Chilobrachys huahini is an impressive Southeast Asian tarantula known for its rapid movements, extensive webbing and defensive temperament. Native to Thailand, this species is an interesting choice for experienced keepers who appreciate active, web-building tarantulas with a more challenging temperament.

A fossorial to opportunistic burrowing species, C. huahini benefits from an enclosure with a generous depth of suitable substrate, allowing it to establish a retreat and create a network of silk-lined tunnels. It is also a prolific webber, often covering the substrate, hides and surrounding surfaces with thick sheets of silk. Providing cork bark and other suitable anchor points can encourage natural web-building behaviour.

This species is exceptionally quick and may readily adopt a defensive posture when disturbed. As with other Old World tarantulas, it lacks urticating hairs and may rely on its speed and defensive behaviour when threatened. Handling is strongly discouraged, and enclosure maintenance should be carried out carefully to minimise stress and the risk of escape.

Care should focus on maintaining stable temperatures, good ventilation and appropriate substrate moisture. The substrate should retain enough moisture to provide a suitable environment without becoming waterlogged. A shallow water dish should always be available, and the enclosure should provide a secure retreat where the spider can hide undisturbed.

Feeding response is generally strong, with appropriately sized live invertebrate prey offered according to the spider's size and condition. Spiderlings and juveniles may grow relatively quickly under suitable conditions, so regular monitoring of growth, feeding response and enclosure size is recommended. Uneaten prey should be removed, particularly when the tarantula is approaching a moult.

With its impressive webbing, active behaviour and characteristic Old World temperament, Chilobrachys huahini is a rewarding species for experienced tarantula enthusiasts seeking a fascinating addition to their collection. Secure housing and confident, careful husbandry are essential for keeping this species successfully.
