Description

Avicularia purpurea , commonly known as the Ecuadorian Purple Pinktoe Tarantula, is a striking arboreal species admired for its dark body and distinctive purple to violet iridescence, which can become particularly noticeable under suitable lighting. Its elegant appearance and interesting web-building behaviour make it a popular choice among enthusiasts of arboreal tarantulas.

An obligate arboreal species, A. purpurea thrives in a tall enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing space, cork bark and secure anchor points for webbing. It will often construct silken retreats around its chosen hiding places, typically higher within the enclosure, where it can rest and retreat when disturbed.

This species is generally considered relatively docile, although individuals can be fast-moving and may jump when startled. As with other arboreal tarantulas, handling is best avoided due to the risk of falls and injury.

Care should focus on excellent cross ventilation, access to fresh water and moderate humidity without allowing the enclosure to become persistently wet. Although occasional moisture is beneficial, stagnant air and excessive dampness should be avoided. Providing a well-ventilated environment with suitable vertical space is essential for long-term success.

Feeding response is generally good, with appropriately sized live invertebrate prey offered according to the spider's age and condition. Growth is moderate under suitable conditions, and a stable environment will help support successful moulting and development.

An excellent choice for keepers interested in colourful arboreal species, Avicularia purpurea combines attractive purple tones, fascinating web-building behaviour and an elegant appearance, making it a rewarding addition to an exotic invertebrate collection.
