Description

Avicularia minatrix , commonly known as the Venezuelan Red Stripe, is a striking arboreal tarantula admired for its dark velvety base colour contrasted by vivid red striping along the abdomen and subtle reddish highlights on the legs.

An obligate arboreal species, A. minatrix thrives in tall enclosures with ample cork bark and anchor points for webbing. It will construct silken retreats high within the enclosure, often forming dense tube webs where it spends the majority of its time.

Compared to many arboreal tarantulas, this species is relatively calm but can be skittish when disturbed. Like other Avicularia , it may use a unique defensive behaviour of flicking faecal matter when threatened, though it will typically retreat rather than stand its ground.

Care should focus on providing good cross ventilation and avoiding overly damp conditions, as stagnant air and excess moisture can lead to issues. A slightly humid environment with proper airflow is key to long-term success.

Feeding response is generally good, and growth is moderate under stable conditions.

Well suited to keepers with some experience in arboreal species, Avicularia minatrix is a beautiful and rewarding tarantula that stands out for its bold patterning and elegant presence.
