Description

Avicularia metallica 'White Hair' is an attractive arboreal tarantula known in the hobby for its contrasting pale hairs against a darker body, giving it a distinctive appearance. As it develops, the combination of dark body colouration and lighter setae can create an appealing, subtle contrast. The 'White Hair' designation is a hobby trade name, and appearance may vary between individuals and stock lines.

As a tiny spiderling measuring 1cm or more, this species benefits from a secure, appropriately sized enclosure with good ventilation and suitable anchor points for webbing. Despite its small size, it displays the characteristic arboreal behaviour of Avicularia , often settling against the sides of its enclosure or creating a silken retreat around available cover.

This species is best suited to keepers prepared to provide stable conditions and monitor small spiderlings carefully. Individuals can be quick-moving and easily startled, so unnecessary disturbance should be avoided. Handling is not recommended, particularly at this size, due to the risk of injury from falls.

Care should focus on excellent ventilation, access to appropriately sized water droplets or a suitable water source, and careful moisture management. The enclosure should not be allowed to become waterlogged or stagnant. Small spiderlings require particular attention to ensure that conditions remain suitable without excessive dampness.

Feeding should consist of appropriately sized live prey, such as small crickets or suitably sized roach nymphs. Prey must be small enough for the spiderling to tackle safely, and uneaten food should be removed. Growth and feeding frequency will vary with temperature, feeding response and individual development.

With its distinctive pale hairs and fascinating arboreal behaviour, Avicularia metallica 'White Hair' is an interesting option for keepers looking to raise a young tarantula and watch it develop through successive moults.
