Description

Avicularia avicularia , commonly known as the Pinktoe Tarantula, is a popular arboreal species admired for its dark body, contrasting pinkish-orange toe tips and elegant appearance. Juveniles often display more contrasting colouration, developing their characteristic darker adult appearance as they mature.

An obligate arboreal species, A. avicularia thrives in tall, well-ventilated enclosures with plenty of vertical climbing space, cork bark and anchor points for webbing. It will often construct silken retreats among its chosen hiding places, spending much of its time resting within or around these retreats.

This species is generally considered relatively docile compared to many terrestrial tarantulas, although individuals can be quick-moving and may jump when startled. It is best observed rather than handled, as falls can cause serious injuries.

Care should focus on providing excellent cross ventilation, appropriate humidity and access to fresh water. While a degree of moisture is beneficial, the enclosure should never become waterlogged or stagnant. Maintaining good airflow is particularly important for the long-term health of this species.

Feeding response is generally good, with appropriately sized live invertebrate prey offered according to the spider's age and condition. Growth is moderate under suitable conditions, and providing a stable environment will help support successful moulting and development.

A fantastic choice for keepers looking to explore arboreal tarantula keeping, Avicularia avicularia combines attractive markings, interesting web-building behaviour and an elegant presence, making it a rewarding addition to an exotic invertebrate collection.
