Description

African Velvet Spiders ( Gandanameno sp.) are small but captivating arachnids, prized for their deep, velvety colouration and compact, rounded appearance. Their soft, almost plush-like texture gives them a unique look that stands out among other invertebrates.

Typically found on low vegetation and within shrubland environments, these spiders create small silken retreats amongst leaves, bark, or twigs. In captivity, they do best in well-ventilated enclosures with plenty of anchor points such as moss, cork bark, and fine शाखing structures.

Generally slow-moving and non-aggressive, Gandanameno sp. will often remain within or near their webbing, venturing out to feed when prey is detected. Due to their small size and delicate nature, handling is not recommended.

Feeding consists of appropriately sized prey such as fruit flies or small micro crickets, with a moderate feeding response under stable conditions. Light humidity and good airflow are key to long-term success.

Well suited to keepers with some experience in smaller invertebrates, African Velvet Spiders make an unusual and rewarding addition for those looking to keep something a little different.
